Healthy March Madness Party Snacks

March Madness Party SnacksI’m pretty sure it’s safe to say I had split personalities in High School. Like hii I’m super innocent elizabeth in my catholic school uniform freaking out if I got a 98% on a test. And then BAMM. Put me on the basketball court and I was kiiiind of a bully. I seriously did a complete 180.

Basically, basketball is my jam. Take me to a football game and sure, I’ll keep up and get somewhat excited. But take me to a basketball game and I’m on a wholeeeee other level. We’re talking full on yelling at the ref. I love how fast-paced it is and how much energy is in the room.

But basketball, just like any sporting event, you gotta pair it with f o o d.

Delicious. Crunchy. Savory. Salty. Greasy. Food. Errrr, maybe not greasy? Yet people tend to think that. Hence the #dadbod. How about #no.Dad BodThese deeeelicous HEALTHY snacks/dishes/dips/apps/heaven are perfect for your March Madness party { or to make all to yourself. } I won’t tell if you don’t. ;)

All My BEST Healthy Lifestyle Tips + Tricks

Healthy Living Tips + Tricks | Faith and Fitness BlogSay noo to dieting and yesss to a healthy lifestyle. Seriously, y’all, these 12 tips are GOLD.  Forming healthy habits is ten million times better than crash dieting for a week then gaining back 15 pounds more than you lost. Yes? Yes.

Read onnnn..

The key to being healthy is everything in moderation. Don’t deprive yourself of ANY food. I absolutely love love loveee frozen yogurt, (S/O to Yogurt Mountain) and I know there is no way I would ever stop eating it because…

Deprivation –> Binging. The more you deprive yourself of one food, the more you want it. Enjoy your guilty pleasures, just be smart about it.

Although you don’t want to deprive yourself, you also don’t want to tempt yourself. Keep your favorite foods around, but keep them in places where you aren’t going to see them every time you pass through the kitchen. Oh hey there chocolate cheesecake just waiting to be devoured.. wrongooo. When I buy a sweet treat, I keep it tucked away so I have to go out of my way to get it. Notttt right beside my bed. { Bad mistake. }

Recording what you eat is a big step when trying to lose weight. It makes you:

  1. realize all the mindless snacking you may do,
  2. gets you to read the nutrition labels,
  3. causes you to think before you eat and much much more.

My favorite food log app is probably My Fitness Pal. Read more about that here.

I am definitely the worst at this. Front loading means you eat most of your calories earlier in the day. Ex: Front loading would encourage eating about 700 cals for breakfast, 500 for lunch and 300 for dinner. Basically the reverse of what you’re { most likely } doing.

BONUS — Front loading could also mean you eat your sweets in the morning, though. Because the earlier in the day you eat your “cheat food” the more time you have to burn it off. Helloooo cake for breakfast.

It’s easy to stick to a diet during the school/work week, because it’s routine. Don’t let the weekends ruin all your hard work (!!!) Going out to eat can be tricky, but a lot of restaurants offer a “skinny” section to their menu which is a great guide. If you want to splurge,  split with a friend and order a side salad. Order dessert, drinks, apps, whatever your heart desires.. Just don’t forget tip #1 — moderation.. even on weekends.

Take the time to enjoy your food. Don’t stuff your face like you’re never going to eat again. *guilty*  You want to give your stomach and mind time to register that it’s not hungry anymore. Wait 30 minutes and see if you’re truly still hungry.

12 Steps to a Healthier You | Faith and Fitness Blog

80/20 —

The 80/20 rule means eating healthy 80% of the time and unhealthy 20% of the time. Nobody can be healthy 100% of the time. If you strive to do this then whenever you slip up (which you will) you’ll feel extremely guilty and that’s not good for your mental healthChoosing a healthy lifestyle should be fun, not stressful. You want to be mindful about how you’re treating your body, but don’t beat yourself up if you slip up or splurge here and there.

Eating when you’re bored is wayyyy too easy to do. Keep a list of activities you can do instead of eating. Examples would be: Read, go for a walk, start a hobby, paint your nails, call a friend, go shopping, watch a show, etc. Don’t resort to eating from boredom. It’s not worth it, and you’ll feel guilty afterwards.

This cannot be stressed enough. Sleep is so so SOO important for your physical and mental health. Treat your body with care and don’t wear yourself down.  You will be more alert and willing to get up and do things with your day when you have a good nights rest. You will also be less inclined to have unhealthy cravings. WUDDUP SUGAR.

No..This does not mean to eat organic. It simply means to avoid processed foods. Anything that has been genetically modified or processed is obviously not intended to be put in our body. God created this earth and all the yummy, NATURAL foods that come from it. If it takes years to expire it’s probably not a great choice. Choosing fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts (in moderation), and both animal + plant proteins is a healthy way of living. Why is a homemade meal always so much better? Because it has real and FRESH ingredients.

A lot of people/websites say to exercise one hour a day/seven days a week. I think a good rule of thumb is three miles of walking/running, or thirty minutes of weight lifting, yoga, pilates, cycling, etc.. It’s important not to overwork your body. We are all trying to achieve different goals, and if you know 30 minutes isn’t going to be enough then by all means exercise longer, but the important thing is to listen to your body.

Food and hunger are incrediblyyyy mental things. If you envision yourself fit and healthy, you will become fit and healthy. Constantly think about your goal and how far you’ve come in reaching it. NOT how far you have left to go.

Anything I’m forgetting? I’d love to know y’alls favorite tricks!

girls who lift faith and fitness blog

If you’re like most women (or like me), you probably refrain from lifting weights because you’re terrified of getting bulky. Whenever I went to the gym I thought of weights as the “boy section” and I was more than content on my side of the gym. hiiii elliptical, treadmill + bike. I thought my muscles would get HUGE and I’d look like those scary body building women on magazines.

REALITY CHECK :: If you want that hour-glass figure you need weights in your life. AND if you want to push your body towards ACTUAL change –> weights.

Weights = lose fat + build muscle. Cardio = lose fat + lose muscle.

1. Say HELLOOOO to a faster metabolism

Most women think that cardio is the best way to burn calories. Sure, cardio does burn calories, but how nice would it be to walk away from your workout and continue to burn calories?

SPOILER: That’s what you get with lifting weights. With cardio, once the workout is over, so is the calorie burn. Weight lifting builds more muscle, and the more muscle that you have, the more calories you will burn throughout the day { because muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does. }

2. Walking Confidently :: say NO to lanky limbs

Having a stronger neck, back, and shoulders will help you stand up straight and look confident. Better posture preserves the spine and reduces lower back pain, too. Basically, you can’t be a total #girlboss if you’re body isn’t strong and coordinated.

3. Bone Strength

Lifting weights doesn’t only strengthen your muscles, but it also strengthens your bones. It increases bone density, which reduces the risk of osteoporosis. <– serious issue, y’all.

TO MY GIRLS — we are FOUR TIMES more likely to suffer from osteoporosis! So grab dem weights.

4.  BYEEE High Blood Pressure :: Healthy Heart <3

Lowering your blood pressure reduces the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other heart conditions. Weight lifting means a longer and healthier life.

A BIG ole thank you to endorphins. (The feel-good chemical that comes from working out) Lifting weights reduces stress, eases joint pain + relieves stress/anxiety/depression/ALL THINGS BAD.

Girls Who Lift Summary-6

Still scared of looking manly???

YOU WILL NOT bulk up! The women who look that way are trying to obtain that look. I don’t even think I have enough time to achieve that look if I wanted to? But to reassure you, here are the FEW possible ways to get bulky:

  • You’re taking steroids
  • You’re taking testosterone or other hormones
  • You naturally have high levels of testosterone.. you would be aware of this already so don’t freak out and think THIS COULD BE MEEEEE!?!?

Chocolate Chess Pie

Chocolate Chess PieI’d like to preface this post by saying if you are one of the many people who made a resolution to eat clean for the new year, this post is not designed for you. BUT if you’re a chocolate lover and willing to bend the rules,  I invite you to keep reading.

Life is about balance anyways, right? So eat a salad, take a walk, and indulge in some pie —  balance. HA.chocolate chess pieI was introduced to this  delicacy at Michael’s house. It’s his grandma’s recipe so you already know it’s gotta be good. Mom’s and Grandma’s just know all the right moves when it comes to baking. AKA pounds of cream, butter, and sugar. Chocolate Chess PieChocolate Chess PieChocolate Chess Pie Chocolate (or should i say “Choclate”.. anyone else notice Grams cute misspelling?) Chess Pie is super great because it requires limited prep time AND you get to put it in a blender. Which is just fun. Because why put kale in a blender when you could put chocolate pie in a blender? I actually tried making it with a hand mixer at first andddddd when that failed I realized it literally got a blender.

Chocolate Chess Pie bakes at two different temperature to create a crisp, flaky texture on top. To me, the contrast in textures creates a make-shift pie crust on top. The fudgey inside and flaky top is straight up heaven. And you save calories without having a pie crust on top, too. So to all you new-years resolution readers… it could be worse?Chocolate Chess PieSide Note: If you’re a local to Birmingham I HIGHLY recommend you visit Penzeys Spices^^ Penzeys is the CUTEST gem of a spice shop in Alabama. You immediately become a gourmet chef just by walking in. Plus, I feel like I gain major cool points when I’m browsing their spices. I could just be weird, but if you’re a foodie you know what I’m talking about. Chocolate Chess Pie

Food and Worship

I’m sure many of y’all have noticed the title of my blog, Faith and Fitness, and you may be wondering why that’s the title since I primarily post about food and nutrition. I’ve been asked a couple of times and would love to clarify.
Worship + Reverence ::
“A feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe and the outward manifestation of this feeling.”
Worshiping God, then, is an outward display of awe and respect directed to the Lord.
so whether you eat or drink 1 corinthians 10:31
To me, food is an art, and art is a form of worship. As a believer it is important to turn everyday activities into opportunities to worship God. Art is a form of communication, it isn’t just something that looks pretty. I’m sure if you talked to any form of artist: musician, painter, sculptor, chef, photographer, etc. they will tell you, if they’re a believer, that what they created wasn’t done by them but rather through them by the Holy Spirit. God is present during the process and in the outcome. When I am hit with inspiration, it’s not my own idea but God communicating with me.

The Lord blessed me with a passion for food as an art form. This includes food styling, food photography, creating recipes, baking, blogging, etc. How you use the gifts and passions The Lord has given you is how you can show reverence towards him. I choose to create mostly healthy food to promote a healthy lifestyle and instill knowledge in others. Creating recipes, writing posts, taking pictures, and everything else that goes into my blog also releases anxiety for me and puts me at peace. When you feel at peace that is the Holy Spirit. While my blog may appear as simply a food blog to some people, it’s much more to me.

Food and fellowship go hand in hand. Not always, but many social events include food. It brings people together and helps us grow in our relationships. Think of how many meaningful conversations have occurred while food was present. I’m not saying food is the sole reason, or that there aren’t other ways to build relationshpis, but everyone enjoys a nice meal or homemade dessert. After all, food is kind of necessary to live!

Lastly, since the blogging process has so many stages, it forces me to appreciate small things. When you’re thinking about what pictures to capture, you begin finding beauty in little things. I know that sounds extremely cliche, but it’s true. How often do you stop and admire things around you? I don’t claim to be a photographer, but I do enjoy taking pictures. It’s becoming one of my passions and it’s a hobby of mine. Because I am taking so many pictures, I tend to think in snapshots. I mentally capture images of things I see that are beautiful to me. Normally I wouldn’t have taken the time to appreciate them, but God has created so much around us we often forget how much thought he put into every detail.

I hope this post helped you better understand the reason for my blog title. No, I don’t write many posts strictly about my faith, but I do know that God is present throughout the process of each and every one.

Below are some pictures I captured a while back. They are very hodgepodge, but just some things that caught my eye. I hope you enjoy them.

Throwback Thursday: West Coast Vibes

#TBT isn’t just for instagram, y’all. Or maybe it is and I’m just wanting an excuse to share this post with you guys? Either way I think we both win. In March I went to California with my dad for Spring Break and it was utterly breathtaking. I’d never really been out to the west coast (besides LA/Disney when I was eh, maybe 8?) so this was all new to me. In order to not bombard you with picture I’m going to divide this into two posts, but here’s a recap of part one.

My aunt and uncle live in San Jose and have the most unique and lively house. It’s full of interesting knick knacks, artwork, and just look at their view! I mean come on. It’s unreal. california san jose viewcalifornia gardening san jose san jose california decorations potssan jose california bird feeder This father-daughter trip was one for the books. It was a week long adventure covering central California in it’s entirety. San Jose, Santa Cruz, Cambria, San Simeon, San Francisco. You name it and I bet we left our footprints there. It was literally a whirlwind of exploring.

The first day we packed our lunches and sat on a “dock” in Wilder Ranch State Park. Wilder Ranch runs along Monterey Bay and is covered with rocky cliffs and a walking trail. monterey bay california wilder ranch park monterey bay california wilder ranchhealthy salad to-go dried persimmons My aunt makes dried persimmons and lemme tell ya.. they’re addicting. I had never heard of them before but I’m so glad she introduced me to them. You have to be careful with dried fruit though! Losing all the water content makes them calorie-dense, but it also makes them a perfect trail snack. And fun for picture taking.monterey bay california persimmons wilder ranch park san jose california monterey bay monterey bay california After walking along the bay we made our way to the Santa Cruz Harbor to grab a drink. This was also a prime spot for people watching. I love how active the culture is in California, or just the west coast in general. Everyone was out biking, boating, skating, kayaking, etc. There was a surfing contest going on, too. I’d never witnessed surfing in real life; only on TV. So yeah, my mind was blown. santa cruz harbor california santa cruz harbor california santa cruz harbor california santa cruz harbor california After grabbing dinner (and searching high and low for ice cream) we both crashed. As wonderful and eye-opening as the trip was, it was also exhausting. I’m eager to share part two with you all, but I hope you found some joy in part one.

Halfway Homemade

Hi, Hi, Hello!beach sunsetI’m excited to share a piece of my unforgettable trip to Florida with you all, but also a bit nostalgic and depressed while going through the pictures to upload. I was completely spoiled with a week-long getaway to the beach with Michael and his family. It was the perfect end to our summer, but definitely made the transition back to school a lot more difficult.

We caught several breathtaking sunsets, took afternoon naps beside the waves, explored the ocean, got stung by a jellyfish (or was that just me?) and enjoyed the freshest seafood possible.sunsetThe first morning we arrived, we stopped by the farmers market and picked up some chicken and ground beef from a sweet local. I’m almost certain I can find the farmer’s market anywhere I go! We froze the meat and pulled it out Thursday night for our mexican fiesta.

There are few things I love more than getting everyone together in the kitchen. Our culture tends to rush our days and fill them with noise, but meals are meant to be paired with sweet conversation and relaxation. Busyness is not something to pride yourself on, but rather taking in the slow moments and quiet stillness in your day is where you’ll find true joy. Watching each person pitch in filled me with delight and created an even warmer atmosphere than before.mexican dinnerFor our half-way homemade meal we prepared chicken and vegetables in a skillet with taco seasoning, spanish rice, black beans, and homemade guacamole. (Recipe to come!) We of course had the essentials such as tortillas, tortilla chips, salsa, and lettuce as well. You don’t have to be a chef to contribute to a home cooked meal. There is no shame in using boxed rice, canned beans, or taco seasoning if you ask me. If the food is enjoyable and you’re in good company that’s all you need.

Cheers to a halfway homemade dinner!

The Silly Goose — A Nashville Favorite

This weekend was special because it was my birthday weekend! I turned the big 2-2. I know everyone says this.. but it truly was [by far] my best birthday EVER. Thursday night was my actual birthday and I got to celebrate with friends from school. We all went to dinner and downtown afterwards, but over the weekend I got to go home and celebrate with my family and Michael :) The Silly Goose Lunch Cafe NashvilleFlash forward to Saturday afternoon — Michael and I went to The Silly Goose. It’s a ridiculously yummy cafe that serves fresh and locally sourced food in Nashville. You can’t go wrong with anything you order from the menu it’s just THAT good. The Silly Goose Lunch Cafe Nashville Michael ordered “The Bird” minus the goat cheese. It had chicken, sun-dried tomato, avocado, and bacon served on toasted whole-grain bread. The Silly Goose Lunch Cafe NashvilleI ordered “The Sparky”. I wanted to branch out and order something new, but if it’s not broken don’t fix it, right? The Sparky has turkey, dried cranberries, brie (SO YUM), roasted walnuts, baby greens, and is served in a sun-dried tomato wrap. I also had them put the basil aioli on the side. I’m not a huge aioli person..The Silly Goose Lunch Cafe NashvilleYou can’t see it too well here, but we ordered “a little bit of both” as our side. It’s a little bit of herbed couscous and a little bit of salad. I’m glad they let you do both because I’m seriously the most indecisive person in the world.. I have a love/hate relationship with having options. Anywho.. the couscous is phenomenal and next time ill be tempted to order one of the couscous entrees instead of a sandwich. But we’ll see how that goes ;)

After lunch we walked around downtown Nashville. I got a suuuuper nice camera for my birthday (s/o to mom and dad) and was incredibly anxious to use it! I didn’t really know what to take pictures of.. but I was going snap happy.Nashville Tennessee Broadway River     Nashville Tennessee Jack DanielsAfter exploring we worked up an appetite.. or maybe that was just an excuse for our sweet tooth.. so we stopped at Savannah’s Candy Store. I wish I had taken more pictures because they had some crazy creations! They let you sample fresh pralines when you walk in the door and I’m not exaggerating when I say they were the best in the world. Michael and I went back for sample #2 when a new chef took over. HA.Savannahs Candy Store Nashville Savannahs Candy Store Nashville TennesseeWe finished up the day by heading to church with my family and winding down with some warm vegetarian chili, pumpkin cake, and a movie. Perfect for this terrible, freezing cold weather. Ew.

I hope you guys had a fabulous weekend as well! And if you’re ever in Nashville please give The Silly Goose a try!
